Dr Horrible

2008 July 17

It’s Pop Culture Geekery time. Mrsdave and I are huge fans of the work of Joss Whedon, who’s best known for the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spin off Angel, with Mrsdave eagerly anticipating the arrival of her new Buffy comics every month. My favourite piece of Whedon’s work is the short lived Sci-Fi series Firefly and its movie sequel Serenity.

This week Joss released his newest project, Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, and it’s absolutely brilliant.

It’s being released in three acts, and will only be online until the 20th of July, so you need to start watching this NOW!

So what is it? It’s a super-villain musical of course. Buffy fans will remember the musical stylings of the the episode “Once more, with feeling” and if you loved that amazingly quirky piece of TV you’ll go nuts for Dr Horrible. Neil Patrick Harris plays the title character and displays his usual comic brilliance, while Nathan Fillion appears as his arch-nemesis. It’s a crime thriller, a love story, super-hero action, but most of all, really entertaining.

In a twist that will amaze long time Whedon fans, there isn’t (yet) a teenage girl with super powers destined to save the rest of the cast, so it’s quite a departure for him. Watch it, watch it, watch it.

Here’s the trailer:

I just spent the last 30 min watching the show with one hand perched nervously over the mute key and the other ready to change screens. Give me a call on Saturday to remind me to watch episode three.

The music is very Ben Folds. I’m still humming the first song about the freeze gun.

I’m no great fan of Joss Whedon as such, but Firefly was the best new sci fi to hit the screen in a long long time. I was heart broken when the story was destroyed in that sub-standard movie!

Just checking in to see if you’re still around Dave – and that tomorrow is still on.

Looking forward to it – cheers.
